The south of the island is mainly salt pans, white pink and blue, the colours due to crustaceans and bacteria, which thrive during the crystallisation process. The pink brine shrimp gives the flamingoes their distinctive colour. You can see the salt mountains from almost everywhere on the island. Bonaire is one of the worlds largest suppliers of salt – mainly for roads. Next time you are stuck behind a lorry salting the icy roads – think flamingoes and Bonaire!
